Musing about childhood memories…
By Pam • Jun 20th, 2008 • Category: Lessons from GranddaddyI’ve been in love with gardening ever since I can remember. At my Granddaddy’s side I got my first taste of growing veggies, fruit, flowers- if we could plant it, we did! He had me helping out from about the age of 3. Granddaddy made the holes and I planted the seeds. I learned how to crank his tractor and drove it at the age of 4-he was not real excited but…..I grew up with more muscadines and black berries than I can imagine now. He had 3 acres of gardens that he and my grandmother worked and harvested. Nothing ever went to waste. My Grandmother canned and froze all summer and she was happy to share her bounty with everyone.

Growing veggies is something that’s in my blood. I have grown tomatoes or something every year since graduating college-more years ago than I care to say here. Vegetables are easy to grow, but choosing the right vegetable for your space is important. You can have 2 or 3 tomatoes in a small space. Or, you can do the 5 gallon bucket method. Just make sure to keep them staked and gently tied up for stability.
Last summer, I had a grape tomato volunteer growing in my flower bed that was so prolific that it trellised a neighboring rose bush. Limas are something you will need a large amount of space for because they produce about 3 beans per pod. Due to the drought conditions of the past few years,I have not had much success with broccoli, luckily my squash is doing great in spite of it!
Pam is has been playing in the dirt since she could walk, loves her veggies, flowers, & pets and wishes that she had 'I dream of Jeanie powers' to get her yard in order.
